Shifting Toward Light & Color

Old Habits Are Hard to Change

Over the past year, my goal has been to paint lighter, brighter interpretations of nature’s internal energy. The world feels a bit heavy at times, and I’ve felt drawn to create paintings that bring joy and vibrant color into people’s lives.

This transition hasn’t been simple. After more than 25 years of working with subdued, earthy tones, shifting my palette has felt like breaking a deeply ingrained habit.

When Vision Changes, Process Must Change

What I’ve come to realize is this: when your vision as an artist changes, your process must change too.

As artists, we often cling to what we know — the familiar rituals, tools, and rhythms that once felt essential. But when those methods no longer serve our creative evolution, it’s time to loosen our grip and make space for something new to emerge.

Experimenting in the Studio

I’ve always loved painting large and feeling as though I could walk right into the picture plane. But this past year, my studio practice has shifted toward smaller studies — spaces to test new tools, experiment with paint application, and explore color from a fresh perspective.

Each day, I ask myself: What does this moment in my life want to express? and How can I let the work lead me there?

This process of experimentation has been both humbling and energizing.

Emerging Into Larger Works Again

Gradually, the struggle has begun to ease, and I’m returning to larger canvases with renewed confidence and joy. One recent example is Tangerine Dream, a 48 x 36-inch acrylic painting that captures this sense of brightness and renewal.

It embodies the movement, color, and life-force energy that have become the heart of my new direction.

Finding Joy in the Search

I don’t know exactly where this journey is leading — and that’s part of the beauty. There’s relief in letting go and joy in being fascinated by what comes next.

The search itself feels alive. And for now, that’s exactly where I want to be.
